Gloucestershire's Historic City Center: A Battle Against Unauthorised Access
Gloucestershire County Council has installed cameras to combat the issue of unauthorised vehicles accessing the historic city center of Gloucester. The restrictions, which prevent drivers from using Eastgate Street, Westgate Street, Northgate Street, and Southgate Street without a permit, have been in place for some time. However, the council has received numerous complaints from various stakeholders, including businesses, the police, and local residents, regarding drivers who ignore these restrictions, posing significant road safety concerns.
To address this, automatic number plate recognition cameras have been activated, and drivers caught violating the rules will face a fine of £70, which can be reduced to £35 if paid within 21 days. The council has emphasized that these restrictions are temporary and may remain in effect until July 4, 2027. To ensure fairness, permits have been issued to traders in the area, exempting them from fines.
Gloucester City Councillor Rebecca Trimnell expressed her satisfaction with the camera installation, stating that it brings them closer to addressing individuals who park on the gate streets in the evening and use them as through roads. She believes that enforcing these rules will enhance the health and safety of pedestrians.
The council encourages residents to report any concerns or story ideas to them via email or WhatsApp. They can also stay updated by following BBC Gloucestershire on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
