He remarked, "Just as you would choose premium gasoline for optimal engine performance, the same applies to your diet. If you opt for inferior fuel, your vehicle won't run efficiently or effectively."

Addressing concerns about the cost of healthy eating, Carson compared the price of premium gasoline to the potential future expenses associated with poor dietary choices. "While high-quality food may seem more expensive at first glance, consider the long-term costs if your body suffers from neglect due to inferior nutrition," he contended. "Our goal is to restore logical thinking and common sense to our dietary choices."

The revised dietary guidelines now advocate for increased intake of protein, dairy, and healthy fats, suggesting a daily protein intake between 0.54 to 0.73 grams per pound of body weight. Interestingly, statistics indicate that approximately 16 to 20 million Americans—about 4% to 6%—identify as vegetarians or vegans, consuming exclusively plant-based diets, according to the Vegetarian Resource Group.

Despite his role promoting these guidelines, Carson admits that he seldom consumes meat and considers himself to be "reasonably healthy." He emphasized the importance of examining regions known as "blue zones," areas recognized for their populations' longevity and focus on predominantly plant-based diets.

"Some people might say that slender individuals owe their physique to vegetarianism. However, have you ever seen a skinny elephant? They thrive on a vegetarian diet too," Carson quipped.

While the updated dietary recommendations highlight the importance of whole, nutrient-dense foods, Carson also warned against relying solely on medications like GLP-1s, such as Ozempic, for weight loss solutions. "These artificial weight-loss methods often provide only temporary results. They require continuous usage and can be quite costly," he cautioned.

Currently, about one in eight American adults—around 12%—have utilized GLP-1 drugs to manage obesity and diabetes, with approximately 6% actively using them as their popularity grows. Carson further asserted, "It's essential to recognize that weight management isn't solely about the food consumed; it also involves the number of calories burned. If you expend more calories than you take in, you will lose weight."
