Rovman Powell: 100+ T20Is, West Indies Reset, and No.5 Masterclass (2026)

Rovman Powell reflects on his T20I captaincy stint, expressing pride in his achievements and looking ahead to future challenges.

Powell, the West Indies' former T20I captain, looks back on his time leading the team with a sense of accomplishment. He's especially proud of guiding the team from ninth to third in the rankings. Moreover, he's grateful for having played over 100 T20Is for the West Indies, a milestone he cherishes.

Powell captained the West Indies in 37 T20Is from March 2023 to December 2024, including the 2024 T20 World Cup. He views his captaincy as a success, fostering better interactions with players and encouraging them to strive for West Indies selection. He reflects on his journey, stating that playing for the West Indies was the initial goal, and achieving over a century of T20I games is something he's incredibly proud of. He also highlights his success in franchise cricket, winning titles with various teams around the globe.

But here's where it gets controversial...Powell's role has expanded beyond just international cricket. He now juggles playing for different franchises worldwide. He strategically selects competitions that don't clash with international duties, like the ILT20 and IPL. He has played 51 T20s this year and 73 in 2024.

To evaluate his performance, Powell focuses on each competition individually, rather than match by match. He emphasizes making meaningful contributions and winning games when given the opportunity.

And this is the part most people miss...Powell prefers batting at number 5. He has played the most innings (105) at this position. He has scored 2069 runs at a strike rate of 146.11 at this position. He believes it allows him to build a consistent innings. He adapts his approach based on the game's situation, focusing on getting settled, reading conditions, and then setting a scoring platform. He acknowledges that batting earlier in the order allows him to take fewer risks and score more runs.

Powell has been succeeded by Shai Hope as West Indies' T20I captain. He's now looking forward to the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in February. Having been retained by KKR, he's preparing to help the West Indies go further in the tournament.
