Witness the rise of a basketball phenomenon! Victor Wembanyama has achieved a remarkable milestone, solidifying his place among the NBA's elite. On Friday night, he notched his 100th consecutive regular-season game with at least one blocked shot, a feat that speaks volumes about his defensive prowess.
In a commanding performance against the Atlanta Hawks, where the San Antonio Spurs secured a decisive 126-98 victory, Wembanyama showcased his all-around skills. He led the team with 26 points, 12 assists, and, crucially, two blocks. One particularly memorable block saw him emphatically reject a shot from Dyson Daniels, sending the ball soaring off the backboard. Later, he denied rookie Asa Newell a layup, further demonstrating his defensive dominance.
This incredible streak began in his rookie season, with the last game he played without a block dating back to January 10, 2024, against the Detroit Pistons.
But here's where the company gets exclusive: only two other players have ever achieved this level of consistency. Patrick Ewing holds the record with 145 consecutive games with a block, and Dikembe Mutombo reached 116 games. Mutombo is also second in the NBA's all-time blocks list, with 3,289, trailing only Hakeem Olajuwon, who has 3,830. It's worth noting that blocks became an official NBA statistic during the 1973-1974 season, adding historical context to this achievement.
Wembanyama's impact this season is undeniable, with 51 blocks already recorded. He even managed to maintain his streak despite missing 12 games due to a calf strain suffered in a November 14 loss to Golden State. His return on December 13 in the NBA Cup semifinals was marked by a strong performance, helping the Spurs secure a 111-109 win against the Thunder.
The Spurs, now with 20 wins, are ahead of last season's pace. Their next challenge is a road game against the Washington Wizards on Sunday night before returning home to face the Thunder.
